Puhleeze-I just went through this crap with a friend and spent several hours trying to get him settled in. He uses dial-up and of course, the disk they gave him wasn't compatible with Vista, after several attempts and errors it was noted a disk needed to be burned to get a download for the dial up, but of course, he couldn't get on line to burn said disk. At least I was able to figure it out after a few hours (eyeroll here) and it was all figured out.
We specifically bought our laptops in November, before the Vista was mandatory on all computers. I think through Gateway, you cans till get the XP versions.
All I can say is the commercials on TV about it asking permission for everything, wasn't even close to how truly annoying ass that was.

You'll get used to it, but it'll take some time.
